A house designed to be shared between two preschool teachers and their families, oriented around a common kitchen. This proposal focuses on the boundaries between private and shared space. Here, the design creates flexibility and balance, providing the flexibility to alternate between zones of privacy and community; as well as a balance between autonomy and collaboration.
Taking inspiration from the Friend’s Center School’s intimate relationship with nature, our design is a low hanging, single story home, creating a humble marker of entry into the future residential community. Solid walls provide privacy from neighbors to the east and west, allowing the home to open onto large front and rear gardens. The broad overhanging green roof creates sheltered exterior spaces which mediate between the gardens and interior spaces. The cantilever provides shade, cover and protection to both the exterior and interior rooms. Pockets of light filter through external skylights to frame active moments on the deck, while providing sunlight to the rooms at the deepest parts of the eave. The green roof mediates noise pollution and climate and unites the home with the landscape.
